An Introduction to the Theory of Knowledge, 2nd Edition guides the
reader through the key issues and debates in contemporary
epistemology. Lucid, comprehensive and accessible, it is an ideal
textbook for students who are new to the subject and for university
undergraduates. The book is divided into five parts. Part I
discusses the concept of knowledge and distinguishes between
different types of knowledge. Part II surveys the sources of
knowledge, considering both a priori and a posteriori knowledge.
Parts III and IV provide an in-depth discussion of justification
and scepticism. The final part of the book examines our alleged
knowledge of the past, other minds, morality and God. In this
extensively revised second edition there are expanded sections on
epistemic luck, social epistemology and contextualism, and there
are new sections on the contemporary debates concerning the lottery
paradox, pragmatic encroachment, peer disagreement, safety,
sensitivity and virtue epistemology. Engaging examples are used
throughout the book, many taken from literature and the cinema.
Complex issues, such as those concerning the private language
argument, non-conceptual content, and the new riddle of induction,
are explained in a clear and accessible way. This textbook is an
invaluable guide to contemporary epistemology.
An epic novel set in the rugged interior of British Columbia, the
first volume of a trilogy which traces the lives of four
generations of a family of exiles. Beginning in 1900, and
concluding with the climactic events leading up to the Millennium,
the series follows Anne and Stephen Delaney and their descendants
as they live through the tumultuous events of this century.
Anne is a highly educated Englishwoman who arrives in British
Columbia at the end of the First World War. Raised in a family of
spiritualists and Fabian socialists, she has fled civilization in
search of adventure. She meets and eventually marries a
trapper-homesteader, an Irish immigrant who is fleeing the
"troubles" in his own violent past. This is a story about the
gradual movement of souls from despair and unbelief to faith, hope,
and love, about the psychology of perception, and about the
ultimate questions of life, death and the mystery of being.
Interwoven with scenes from Ireland, England, Poland, Russia,
and Belgium during the War, "Strangers and Sojourners" is a tale of
the extraordinary hidden within the ordinary. It is about courage
and fear, and the triumph of the human spirit.

In the interest of consumer health, many fats and oils
processors continuously strive to develop healthier preparation
procedures. Following in the footsteps of its previous bestselling
editions, Fats and Oils: Formulating and Processing for
Applications, Third Edition delineates up-to-date processing
procedures and formulation techniques as well as the effects of new
ingredients, processing, and formulation on globally relevant
applications.
In addition to examining all product categories, such as types
of shortening, margarine, and liquid oil, this new edition includes
an array of new features, including:
- Expanded coverage of essential fatty acids and their health
implications
- Extended chapter on problem solving and discussion of trans
fats
- Added information on sterols and stanols usage, processing aids
and additives, and specialty fats and oils
- Improved quality management chapter
Doused with practical advice, this ready reference combines 45
years of indispensable literature with the personal experiences of
the expert author. It is an essential knowledge base for
determining the best way to make processing and formulation
techniques healthier and more cost-effective.
Philosophy and gardens have been closely connected from the dawn of
philosophy, with many drawing on their beauty and peace for
philosophical inspiration. Gardens in turn give rise to a broad
spectrum of philosophical questions. For the green-fingered
thinker, this book reflects on a whole host of fascinating
philosophical themes. * Gardens and philosophy present a
fascinating combination of subjects, historically important, and
yet scarcely covered within the realms of philosophy *
Contributions come from a wide range of authors, ranging from
garden writers and gardeners, to those working in architecture,
archaeology, archival studies, art history, anthropology, classics
and philosophy * Essays cover a broad spectrum of topics, ranging
from Epicurus and Confucius to the aesthetics and philosophy of
Central Park * Offers new perspectives on the experience and
evaluation of gardens
A gripping apocalyptic drama about the editor of a small-town
newspaper in North America faced with the greatest crisis of his
life. As he and his family are hunted down by a police state
seeking to crush all freedom, the editor chronicles his struggle of
a thoroughly modern man put to the ultimate test, a man who in
losing himself finds himself.
This is a story of a female wounded warrior from the Gulf War with
a traumatic brain injury and terminal breast cancer. As part of
recovery she found a peaceful journey through a friendship with a
horse. Thanks to the non-profit public charity, Sanctuary Island
Inc., her experience was supported and funded. The outcome resulted
in her having a heartwarming experience.
The muscle-bound male body is a perennial feature of
classically-inflected action cinema. This book reassesses these
films as a cinematic form, focusing on the depiction of heroic
masculinity. In particular, Hercules in his many incarnations has
greatly influenced popular cultural interpretations of manliness
and the exaggerated male form.

Photonic microcavity and nanocavity devices with quantum dot active
materials combine the strong confinement of photons and the
discrete states of electronic carriers. They are promising
candidates for small-footprint, high-speed and low-power active
optical components, and provide a robust platform for the
enhancement of light-matter interactions. This monograph starts
with an introduction to the basic concepts of quantum dot active
materials and photonic cavity devices, and the potential
applications in photonic integrated circuits and quantum
information processing. Then the material growth and device
fabrication techniques are described. Microdisk lasers and photonic
crystal nanocavity lasers with InAs quantum dot active material are
presented as two important examples. The lasing behavior's
temperature and wavelength dependences are explained by a simple
model. The last part of the monograph presents the proposal and
demonstration of the first photonic crystal nanocavity edge
emitting laser, which is designed for high density planar
integration and to achieve high collection efficiency for
nanolasers.
